What is the attendance policy?

We hope that your child is able to come to school every day, except in the cases of sickness, bereavement or other family emergencies. In order to provide each student with the best education possible, it is also important to arrive to school on time. If your child must be absent or tardy, it is very important to call our school or send a note in with your child. If our school office does not hear from you about your child’s absence or tardiness, they will be unexcused. Unexcused absences can lead to a Truancy citation and if excessive, may affect promotion to the next grade.

Please make every attempt to schedule non-emergency appointments (such as the doctor or dentist) outside of school hours, especially during district testing times.

How does the Breakfast and Lunch program work?

We serve a free breakfast to all students in the classrooms each morning . Regular lunch is  $1.25 and reduced lunch is .40 cents. Students pay for lunch using an account number. You can place money on your child’s card by sending a check to school with your student, mailing a check to the school, or by personally delivering it to the cafeteria.  We will accept cash or checks. If your child does not have enough money in their account to pay for his or her lunch, we will give your child a small lunch for free that day. The next day we hope that you will either send money in for your child's account, or bring a packed a lunch from home.

What is the dress code?

Because we are a part of the Tolleson Elementary School District, we have adopted a mandatory school uniform policy.  Research and community input have showed that school uniforms:

  • enhance a climate for learning
  • ensure campus safety and security
  • instill school unity and pride
  • eliminate label competition
  • promote affordable dress
  • provide homogeneity and opportunities for self-expression
  • uphold modesty standards
  • simplify dressing

We feel that all of these promote academic achievement and a safe and secure environment for your child to learn. Therefore, the dress code is as follows:

Girls

  • Girls need to wear solid white or solid hunter green shirts with a collar and sleeves (short or long). This can be either a polo type shirt or a blouse.
  • Girls need to wear navy blue long pants, walking shorts, skirts, or ‘skorts’ with no visible logos. We do not allow parachute material, denim, corduroy, or stretch fabric for either the tops or bottoms or LOGOS OF ANY KIND.
  • Skirts, shorts, “skorts’ or jumpers cannot be shorter than 5 inches above the knee.
  • Girls may wear shorts under their skirts as long as they do not show.  No undergarments may show at any time.
  • Skirts may not have a slit.
  • Capri pants are okay to wear, as long as they are in compliance with the rest of the dress code.
  • We do not allow flip-flops, slippers, platform shoes, marshmallow shoes, or bare feet. Flat heeled shoes (less than 1 ½ inches) are okay.

Boys

What if I can’t afford to purchase the clothing for the dress code?

If you are unable to afford a uniform, our district will work with you to resolve this matter. We will not deny an education to any student because of financial hardship.

What if my child refuses to wear the uniform, or comes to school without the uniform?

We require students to wear the school uniform at all times. The only exception is on the occasions that we have a “Spirit Day.” We will notify you a day before a “Spirit Day” is scheduled.
If a student comes to school without the school uniform on, we will issue him or her a loaner uniform in exchange for the clothes worn that day. When the clean loaner uniform is returned, your child's own clothes will be returned. If we do not have a loaner outfit, your child may call home and have a uniform brought to school. If no one is at home, we will have the student remain in a specific location until he or she is able to make contact with you. If a student refuses to follow the dress code policy, we will suggest alternative enrollment in a neighboring school district.

What is the Make Your Day Program?

The Make Your Day Program is a system that promotes citizenship and centers on one rule: that no student has the right to interfere with the learning and safety of others.  Students in all grades earn points each day for doing what is expected and doing it the best they can. At the end of the day, each student will have made their day if they receive a certain number of points out of the total possible points for that day. Students who do not make their day will need to have their parents sign and return a form the next day. This way, parents will know how their child behaved in school.

Requirements for points earned vary by grade level. For more details on this program, please check out your student handbook.

What is an Agenda? Does my child need one?

Agendas are a way for students to stay organized in school, keep track of their homework, communicate between home and school, and set goals for themselves. We require all students to use an Agenda. It also contains a calendar, educational resources, and the Parent/Student Handbook. Students will need a 3-ring binder to hold their Agenda.

What is the discipline policy at school?

We expect all students to respect adults, and the race, gender, culture, and native language of others at all times. We will not tolerate slurs or derogatory behavior or language.  In addition to these rules, we expect each student to:

  • comply with all district policies
  • come to class prepared and on time
  • respect and obey persons in authority
  • not interfere with a teacher’s right to teach or a student’s right to learn
  • not engage in any behavior which violates the personal rights or well being of another person
  • remain on campus and in assigned areas at all times
  • follow all rules and expectations of the Make Your Day program
  • use good judgment

Students who do not follow these expectations will not earn all of the possible points in the Make Your Day program, and will proceed through a system of steps depending upon the severity of their behavior. There are five steps that proceed in order according to the misbehavior. Please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook for details.
